Bringing the Vision to Life
This Lion was designed for the website and logo use for United Ministries International. The goal was to bring a vision the founding member, Albie Pearson, had to life. I had many, very detailed discussions with Albie before creating this. There were a few key elements that needed to be represented in someway. The image of God as a Lion with gold keys in his mouth, the Bible verse Matthew 16:19, and a bunch of kids playing in the lion’s mane.
Sometimes how God speaks to us, or what we see in our minds eye is very abstract. It’s not something that we can easily wrap our heads around in the natural world. I truly wanted to respect Albie’s vision without misrepresenting it. At the same time, a piece with a lot of elements can quickly become a checklist and lose some of the artistic value that makes it a beautiful work of art. I’m not going to lie… the kids playing in the lion’s mane part made me pause for a minute. How do you bring that to life without making it distracting or lose the powerful meaning behind it?
What I ended up doing was creating a bunch of simple sketch-type drawings of kids and hiding them throughout the mane. A sketch is unfinished. It’s a glimpse into the “potential” of the work of art in the creators’ mind. The meaning was there without distracting from the lion. To incorporate the verse, I made the Keys in the shape of Mt 16 19.
